CHAPTER 6

Cici vs. Not Flag Football

We all sat in complete silence while we waited for Elizabeth to come back from taking a phone call. I needed to figure out how I felt about Cole keeping things from me, but I would deploy my usual modus operandi and think about that later.

“Well, that was the mayor.” Elizabeth returned with her phone in hand. “He heard what John has done to all of us, and he has signed an emergency executive order quarantining us to the boundaries of our property. So thanks for that, son.”

John picked something off his shirt, smelled it, and popped it in his mouth. “Happy to help.”

“Yes, well, since we’re legally obligated to stay here, what does everyone want to do? I will take suggestions from everyone except John.”

I liked this subject change, and I wanted to move things as far away from elevator talk as I could. Plus, I had packed for a lot of events that were clearly no longer happening. “What about a Renaissance-themed costume party?”

“What?” Elizabeth voiced the question, but it was apparent on everyone’s face.

“Nothing, Mom. She’s joking.” Cole reached over at another attempt to pat my leg, but I swatted at his hand.

I shook my head. “Well, now I just look silly for packing it.”

He chuckled. “Honey, you… never mind.”

“I really think something was wrong with that chocolate.” John dashed out of the room before I could dissect what Cole might have been about to say.

I hopped up off the couch, making Cole jump. “On that note, let’s talk about food. It’s time to baste the turkey and start on the side dishes.”

Elizabeth fixed her hair. “I don’t know what any of that means, sweetie, but I fully support you.”

Felicity handed a sleeping Ava to Mark. “Um, Cici, could I talk to you in the other room before we begin the inevitable disaster that will be this cooking class?”

I followed her into the formal dining room and could hear the less than quiet footsteps of the rest of the Danverses moving within earshot.

She started talking before we were even all the way in the room. “Cici, I feel terrible about outing you like that in front of the family. I’m so used to antagonizing Cole and John without boundaries that I didn’t stop to consider the collateral damage. I’m so sorry. Please don’t be mad at me.”

Felicity wrung her hands and shifted from one foot to the other. I had never seen her look this uncomfortable.

I let out a long breath. “I’m not mad at you. I’m more embarrassed than anything. I appreciate the apology, though.”

She laughed and hugged me. “The last thing you should feel is embarrassment. Hell, my parents were watching porn in a language they don’t even speak. Boundaries are… a fluctuating thing in this family. For better or worse.”

I couldn’t help but laugh with her. She had a point. “I’m sure this will provide endless hours of entertainment for everyone at my expense. The joke possibilities are bottomless.”

She patted my back as she kept me locked in a prolonged hug.
